Leveraging FB Memories and How I Answer the Annoying “and what do you do?” Question
So today, is a day I’ve posted on Facebook many times, many different years apparently.
If you’re active on FB, this is one of the perks.
Though that assumes that today you’re posting things your future self might appreciate - have you thought about that?
I don’t really think about it so much as appreciate that years ago (like 10 or 11?) I started my FB profile and have been posting stuff that future me now does really dig.
[Human Design sidenote - I do also have Gate 47 defined three times in my chart - it’s all about snapshots of the past and making sense of the - or it tries to at least ... without 47, this might not be the same kind of leverage point for you - or at least not as easily made useful]
But anyway, on to the second promise in the headline.
During that unexpected call I had last night -
(it lasted like TWO hours - but “time-flies” two hours, not “are-we-there-yet” two hours. Time is most definitely relative.)
The question came up -
“When people ask you ‘what is it you do?’, what do you say?”
Last night I said “Meh, I don’t even bother answering anymore”
She persisted, “Yeah but like if you went to a networking event for ...”
I cut her short, “I don’t do that”
Reminds me of the Bob Newhart Stop It! video I’m so fond of sharing at just the right moments.
Have I shared it with you?
If yeah, you know what I mean.
If no, your time may come 🙃😆
😂
I knew what she wanted was some kind of clever thing to say in situations like that - but I literally don’t ever subject myself to that kind of thing - ever.
For me it’s genuinely close to torture. I think I’d rather go watch paint dry somewhere.
Yes it’s that uninteresting- with strangers.
With people I already know - or who at least already feel like they know, like and trust me ...
Completely different.
Mucho exhilarating.
If that’s even a word that could be associated with me - I don’t get overexcited about much.
That has its pluses and minuses.
But anyway - that question is the backstory to how we find ourselves here.
Without that question last night, I would never have recognized the importance of this 8 year old memory.
And been able to expand - in story - about a question that always gets asked (about a question that also never stops being asked)
It’s actually been years since anyone’s asked me what I do - but when they used to ... I always answered in a way that stopped them before they got as far as this meme.
“I sell stuff online”
Is what I’d say.
Maybe they thought I’d tell them something more interesting, or maybe they actually weren’t interested in the first place.
Either way, it always shuts it down.
Which, because I wasn’t wherever I was “looking for a place I could get my foot in any door” (come to find out a few years later, I’m not a 4th line Design that’s built for networking, or a 5th line Design that ultimately needs recognition for its expertise and perfect solution delivery - referrals can work in either of those situations imho) ...
Is a good outcome.
Because none of that is me.
There’s a difference between Left and Right Mind here too - could stand to look up the details actually. Something something about Left needing a hat.
I also have an undefined ego (nothing to prove or improve) ... the quicker that “conversation” can be shut down, the better.
For my Design. For my literal wellness.
What’s been true for you?
Do you get that question much?
How do you answer it? 🤔
Love this meme 😍
