The Realm of the 4th Line Being
Gaia shared - (and good lord this is long - tl;dr for moi đ)
âSo when youâre looking at the Security Strategy this is the theme for all 4s. Are they going to be dependents all their life? Are you simply going to be dependent on the social interaction? And if youâre going to be dependent on the social interaction, itâs always going to be a life of bonds made and broken, and friends changing and so forth and so on.
The other side of that is becoming a benefactor. In other words, getting to the place where you can really bring out your influence. This is a place where with young children itâs very, very important that they to see that because they're attracted to someone else in their circle doesn't mean that that person is better. This is one of the most important things for 4s to understand. Itâs very easy for them to raise up the level of the other. Itâs very easy for them to see that and see the other as the benefactor.
This business about being the opportunist that opportunity comes from the other. I don't want you to think that the 4 has to bow down each time that happens. Itâs not like anybodyâs doing a 4 a favor. They donât have any choice. Itâs just the way the mechanism works.
Itâs one of the things to see about the security strategy of the 4 is that in order for them to be healthy, they have to see that when theyâre out with their circle, theyâre a benefactor, not a dependent. Thatâs quite a step.
Again, it is the security of seeing that youâre secure within yourself, youâre secure within the group. Youâre secure in your role within the group, and you know how to get out. And in going into the group, the more the 4 is able to reveal, the more the group becomes their confidants, the more powerful the 4 becomes, the more influential they become and the better they feel about their lifeâŠ
Emotional Resonance is the pleasure
principle. And what I mean by that is howâitâs hard to find the
words for itâhow enjoyable or not it is to be in the world. We know that being in the world is both enjoyable and not. Itâs a wave. Itâs a movement thing. We know that.
But itâs about your spirit as you move in this realm of pleasure that is there and not, and how your spirit deals with that. This is the real quality that youâre looking for in Emotional Resonance.
So, look at the theme. Youâve got Kindness/Meanness. And you can understand right away what happens when the 4 ends up being dependent, when the 4 ends up being fatigued, when the 4 ends up being an abdicator, their spirit is mean. Itâs mean. It can be very mean.
Challenge a 4 and see how mean theyâll get. Oh, nasty, nasty, nasty, and influentially nasty. You donât want the meanness of a 4. If youâve got a 4 for a lover, never take that lover to the point that theyâre going to display their meanness, because youâll never forget it.
And they will be mean about everything you thought they didnât care about; everything. They wonât leave out anything. After all, theyâre empathic. They take it all in. You donât want that meanness. And of course, the meaner they become, the less likely it is that theyâre going to be advantaged in social opportunity. And the whole function of being a 4 slowly breaks down.
The other side of it is Kindness. Now, if you want a 4 to be kind with you, always nod your head when they talk. And if you nod your head when they talk, even if youâre thinking âGee, theyâre full of @#$%,â and youâre nodding your head, everything is okay. And theyâre so kind. They can be so sweet. This is their social gift.
Iâm always amazed that people when they meet 4s for the first time, youâre introduced to a 4, and you know right away that that person is going to think, âGee, what a nice person.â Ah, you havenât had a chance to challenge them yet. You havenât tasted their meanness. You havenât stepped over the line yet.
So, what we really want is we want a lot of children that are raised that are not mean. And meanness is born in the social milieu. It is. And Iâve been a teacher for a very long time. I can remember what it was like to teach young people. I can remember what it was like to teach his generation when they were 13. Theyâre mean. The social environment of children is mean, mean, mean. And it is. Theyâre cruel.
All of this is inherent in the nature of that 4th line. We have dysfunctional 4th line children. We put out a great deal of this meanness. Not only this meanness, but the social group begins to dysfunction. In other words, we canât survive without the necessary input of the 4. Everybody would like to avoid the common cold every year. But thatâs a disaster. Weâre not here to avoid it. Weâre here to go through it. We need to. Otherwise, we donât upgrade our immune system. And you constantly have to upgrade your immune system.
The 4th line being that moves towards that negative, that moves towards the meanness, that moves towards more abdication, that pulls further away, they donât make the necessary influential contribution that keeps the social milieu dynamic and moving forward, because after all, these are influential beings.
How many of you are 4/6s? Thatâs a lot of 4/6s in the room. I could feelâthis is the meanest group of people Iâve ever had to deal with. I could feel the vibe the whole time I was doing the 4/6. I could feel this, because when I was doing the 1/3 there were a few things I picked up with my open centers. But the moment I was doing the 4/6, I felt like boy, Iâm hitting people. I could feel this, âWhat I didnât get from my parents.â More than half this room is a 4/6.
The other question is, how many of you are emotional? Altogether, how many are emotional; just emotional people? I havenât had to pee so much in teaching this class. Yesterday I thought I had a bladder disease. The emotional energy combined with your childhood, this is a killer. Iâm going to need a catheter. [student laughter]
Youâre cleaning me out. Yes, you emotional people, you really help me. To have an open emotional system and to go out in the evening and have a few drinks with people who are emotional, this is a killer. Youâre never at the table. A little humor there. [laughter]
Okay, let me get to the Awareness Resonance. This is one of these words that always bothers people: Corruption. This is one of my favorite themes of the 4th line, because I understand what that means.
I used to give the story of the judge, because weâre looking at the 50th gate and the 50th gate is the gate of the law. This is the gate of the lawgiver to the tribe, that one that sets the rules thatâs going to protect the nourishment of the intelligence of the tribe. Laws in and of themselves are not necessarily always correct. Laws eventually lose their value and a new evolution takes place and a new law replaces it. There are very few judges that know how to change the law. Only the corrupt ones do that. You corrupt the law. You break it yourself, and you set a new standard.
Itâs one of the things that I can only explain to you biologically is to understand that the 4th line is responsible for the communal immune system. And as such, itâs responsible for the awareness of its community. Now, I also donât want to give the 4th lines this inflated sense of value, but yet at the same time I truly want you to understand that they are the lynchpin of community awareness.
In other words, when youâre dealing with a 4th line being, what youâre dealing with is the possibility to influence the group, the community, but influence that community to take another evolutionary step. In other words, this is not about maintaining stasis. The 4 enters into a relationship with others not for the relationship. Never for the relationship; thatâs secondary.
Biologically you enter into that relationship because itâs your task genetically to influence the other. Thatâs what it all about. And not simply influence the other, but influence the group. Thatâs why itâs so difficult for 4s to accept challenge. Thatâs not what theyâre designed for. What theyâre designed for is to simply say âYou donât have to challenge me, everything Iâm telling you is the truth. Just listen to what Iâm telling you.â
Itâs not their job to say âAll right, Iâm going to give you the whole basis of why Iâm telling you.â Thatâs not their job. Theyâre not 1s. Itâs just this 4 theme. So one of the things to see when 4s enter into a group they corrupt it. They have the potential of transforming that group. The moment that theyâre not transforming the group, is the moment the group loses its fertility.
The most important thing about that is that what itâs really losing is the development of its intellectual tools, the intellectual capacity. So 4s are very important. Theyâre very important in upgrading, because thatâs really what it is, upgrading the awareness of their groupsâŠ
Remember, a hexagram has two exponents. A hexagram can express its value in two ways: It can express its value in a closed group, and thatâs the role of the 4. Or it can express its value universally, and thatâs the role of the 5.
Now, the role of the 4 is the foundation. In other words, itâs all built on the tribe. Itâs all built on the community. This is the way the foundation is laid out. So the 4 has enormous responsibility. If youâre going to change the world, itâs not heretics like me who are 5s that are going to change the world. Itâs the 4s that take the message to the group; theyâll change the world, because the unit that they can influence, they can influence so profoundly.
We canât stay healthy or not, without the influence of the 4s. Thatâs one of the things to understand about their role and one of the things to understand about transference is that because they are like that, because there is always this shift mechanism, they can influence everyone. And they maintain, in that sense, the global immune system.
One of my old jokes, and I always use Buddha because I donât like Buddha, that if you could bring Buddha back with a time machine you could drag him out of whatever and bring him backâhave a woman bring him back because that would piss him offâbut anyway, bring him back.
You get him here and you go looking for a Bodhi tree, you finally get him and he sits down under the Bodhi tree and he drops dead. He drops dead because the immune system of 2000 years ago is an immune system that dealt with an environment that was very different. Our environment is changing moment-by- moment and our immune systems have to adapt. This is the function of the 4th line.
Thatâs why itâs a line of influence. And in the same way that it influences us in terms of our global immune system, it influences us in terms of our global intelligence. It may be wonderful that we have the Internet full of more information than any person can consume in a lifetime, but at the same time it passes over villages where people donât really know very much, if you know what I mean.
In other words, itâs one of the things to understand that universalized principles are all fine and good, but the only way youâre truly going to impact humanity is that you have to impact humanity at its basic configuration, which is the basic groups, the basic communities, the basic tribes. And that is the realm of the 4th line being.â
